Eating disorders are a prevalent mental health condition throughout the world, affecting all races, genders, socioeconomic status, and ethnicities. Eating disorders are one of the most deadly mental illnesses, second to opioid overdose (ANAD, 2021), with mortality rates skyrocketing as the prevalence of eating disorders continues to be recognized. This study utilized plaster castings of the body as an art therapy intervention to explore embodiment for individuals with, or in recovery from, eating disorders. Participants were over the age of 18, currently enrolled at Pratt Institute, and have received a diagnosis of an ED at some point in their life. Participants were asked to create a plaster cast of a body part and transform it into an expressive sculpture. Over two hour-long individual sessions with the researcher, participants used plaster castings of the body to explore embodiment as it relates to their eating disorder. This study aimed to explore whether or not plaster castings of the body can aid in embodiment, combat distorted perception of self, and create a bridge between the mind and body. Following the interventions, the data collected through self-reported questionnaires was assessed through a qualitative lens and analyzed through a phenomenological approach. Results indicate this intervention has potential for implementation in multidisciplinary treatment settings that include creative arts therapy.
