Thesis (M.A.)--Pratt Institute, 2024.
Includes bibliographical references
This thesis is a two-fold art and design curriculum research project that entails the design and analysis of planned and operational curriculum, within a culturally responsive pedagogy framework. Chapter 2, constitutes a Unit of Study, designed for 5th grade visual arts students in a public school setting, is centered on the theme of "Connection to The Natural World." The curriculum design includes contemporary artists, Sibonelo Chiliza, Liberty Shuro, Virginia Wagner, Duane Linklater, and Maimouna Guerresi, whose work emphasizes themes of humanity's past and current artistic relationships to the environment. The culminating project involves students creating two botanical drawings, one from observation and one from imagination. Chapter 3 is a case study, conducted by a two-person research team (including the author) that explores how the planned curriculum is operationalized by an art teacher in a New York City public school. The case study examines the process by which the teacher plans and operationalizes the curriculum and the changes that occur in the process.
