Thesis (M.A.)--Pratt Institute, 2024.
Includes bibliographical references
This thesis is a two-fold art and design curriculum research project that analyzes the planned and operational curriculum. The first part is a Unit of study, designed for fifth graders in a public school, centered on the theme of personal and cultural memory. The curriculum design includes contemporary artists: Suzanne Jackson, Betye Saar, and Kamala Ibrahim Ishag, whose work emphasizes themes of cultural memory, identity and relationships. The culminating project involves students creating a series of three drawings that explore an object of significance and its relationship to the past, present and future. The second part is a case study about the planned and operational curriculum as realized by an art teacher in a New York City public school. The case study examines the process by which the teacher plans and actualizes the curriculum and the changes that occur in the process.
