Thesis (M.S.)--New York University Tandon School of Engineering, 2023.
Includes bibliographical references
People visit art museums for various reasons: to learn, to relax, to research, etc. But what about those who visit for personal connection to the artwork? John Falk, a leader in museum visitor studies, developed five visitor identities for cultural institutions such as museums. Those identities are explorers, rechargers, experience seekers, facilitators, and professionals (Falk 156-157). This thesis project proposes a sixth identity, contemplators. These individuals visit for self-reflection and personal connection to artwork in art museums and galleries specifically. While Falk's research focused primarily on science centers this project centers around art institutions. Non-visitors or people who do not visit museums regularly, find these spaces intimidating due to not understanding fine art. Introducing a new category of museum visitors will encourage more people to engage with artwork personally by reflecting on their experiences.
