By identifying the difference between humanistic and biblical counseling models and concerns, this dissertation attempts to help the biblical counselor guide his client to address his (client's) existential concerns (meaning, value, dignity) in a biblical way without resorting to humanistic models and concerns. Chapter 1 identifies the current challenges facing biblical counseling and the goal for this dissertation. Chapter 2 contrasts a biblical-philosophical foundation for counseling with a humanistic philosophical foundation for counseling. Chapter 3 presents anthropological differences between two counseling models and highlights the resulting divergences in counseling methods and outcomes. Chapter 4 compares two counseling methods-a biblical model (Biblical Framework Counseling) and a humanistic model (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy)-to emphasize how the different philosophical commitments produce divergent transformation agendas. Chapter 5 identifies the biblical approach for transformation- the indwelling Spirit of Christ-resulting in Spirit-enabled obedience. Chapter 6 summarizes the overarching purpose of this dissertation: to equip believers to identify and overcome the modern influence within the popular culture-seeking a remedy for man's existential concerns without using humanistic methodologies-and replacing this ideology with a sufficient biblical paradigm.
