In this dissertation, I argue that metaphorical models play an essential role in conveying the nature of Scripture but that current models, though helpful, fall short of communicating that nature adequately. I thus propose a biblically derived model, "Scripture Is Food," that safeguards more effectively, discloses more comprehensively, and renders more viscerally the nature of Scripture. In chapter 1, I trace a history of metaphor to demonstrate how metaphors turn into system-shaping models and to glean criteria to evaluate models. These criteria include faithfulness, fruitfulness, and fittingness. In chapter 2, I survey three current models for Scripture-Anthony Thiselton's "Scripture Is a Musical Score," Kevin Vanhoozer's "Scripture Is a Theo-Dramatic Script," and John Feinberg's "Scripture Is Light"-and I employ the criteria from chapter 1 to evaluate these models. This evaluation finds these models useful but lacking in ways that call for a better model. I thus propose, in chapter 3, a biblically derived model of "Scripture Is Food," and I develop this model from Scripture and historical theology. Then using the same criteria from chapter 1, I evaluate the food model over against the other three models to demonstrate that the food model better communicates the nature of Scripture. In chapter 4, I defend the food model against general, theological, and practical objections that may threaten the legitimacy or effectiveness of the model in conveying the nature of Scripture. Despite these objections, the model proves robust.
