The constant influence of false teaching on the church demands that pastors have a biblical rubric from which to respond to the negative impact of unbiblical teaching. This paper was produced to examine 1 John for a standard providing a pastoral response against false teaching. The context of 1 John involved a response to unbiblical teaching that contradicts the incarnation of Jesus Christ and his resulting life that reflects the character of God. John's refutation of these teachers was based on the character of God. God was presented as Light, Righteousness, and Love who sent Jesus as the way of salvation and as an example for living that reflected the character of God. Scholarly research has not provided a pattern for handling false teaching based on the character of God as does 1 John. Therefore, the research began with the question, "Does 1 John provide a pattern for pastors to respond to unbiblical teaching?" Current controversy against the church was identified, current literature about 1 John was examined, 1 John was exegetically studied, a pastoral pattern of response was presented, and, finally, 1 John's pattern was applied to the current controversies. The discovery resulted in finding a four-part pattern used by John: (1) present the character of God; (2) reveal the unbiblical teaching that contradicts God's character; (3) encourage believers by providing signs of salvation producing assurance; and (4) exhort believers to displaying God's character in life. The conclusion of this study is that 1 John is a biblical aid to pastors and Christians to refute and recognize false teaching. The discovery was that every teaching either contradicts the character of God or is consistent with the character of God. Therefore, the character of God is the foundation of truth and also the filter for all teaching.
