Pentecostal research has long supported the personal nature of a Pentecostal encounter with the Holy Spirit at Spirit-baptism. This dissertation will show how Dietrich Bonhoeffer's theology of sociality provides a pivotal theological foundation for considering the importance of the ministry of the Spirit for the Body of Christ. It begins with Scripture, but Bonhoeffer's works build upon the Word and develop ideas that lend themselves to Pentecostal research. While the Spirit transforms at an individual level, His work establishes a whole new way of community existence.Sociality begins with an alteration in human existence in regard to relationship with God and others. Sociality calls for authentic love and invites one into community as part of the Body of Christ. While sociality begins at salvation, Spirit baptism changes one's framework and emboldens one with a greater love for others and with power for witness. Each member of the community has both the privilege and responsibility to contribute to the Body of Christ. Each individual has been called to share Christ.Bonhoeffer's theology proves especially important here because of his emphasis on "worldly Christianity," which calls for a Christianity that does away with the secular and sacred. Christ is over everything, and God calls Christians to truly engage their communities with the tangible love of Christ. They bring the kingdom of heaven to this world in their witness. This dissertation explores Bonhoeffer's thought and applies it to Pentecostalism. It reflects on the eschatological implications of sociality and delves into what this means from a Pentecostal perspective.
