Thesis (Ph.D.)--Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, 2023.

This dissertation aims to analyze John's use of Isaiah by examining Isaianic quotations and motifs through a synthetic approach from a literary-theological perspective. While scholars agree that John's Gospel is particularly indebted to the book of Isaiah, previous investigations on John's use of Isaiah have been restricted by methodological constraints where quotations and motifs have been analyzed discretely. This dissertation examines quotations and motifs throughout the entire narrative of the Fourth Gospel in conjunction and argues that the text of Isaiah provided John a structural framework for his Gospel and a conceptual framework for his presentation of Jesus. By analyzing intertextual and intratextual elements in tandem, this dissertation offers a synthesis of John's use of Isaiah and sustained reflection on the evangelist's reading of the prophetic text.
