Includes bibliographical references
This dissertation argues that as a culturally minded tradition, a Kuyperian theological tradition as espoused by those such as Abraham Kuyper, Herman Bavinck, and Albert Wolters provides important theological resources to interpret and provide appropriate guidance on how to play and use video games in ecclesial and institutional settings by using a particular cultural method. This method entails first understanding video games on their own terms, listen for what video games might teach us, apply theological lenses to video games, and then to only then develop practices and actions that are informed by all steps of this process. In order to properly understand video game this dissertation argues that it is also important to understand video games as a subspecies of the notion of play. As such this dissertation argues that a Kuyperian method to interpret video games is enhanced by adopting Johan Huizinga's philosophical and historical interpretation of play that is in turn nourished and balanced out by other related elements of church tradition and modern ludic-related developments.Practically speaking, this dissertation also argues that the church has not adequately equipped or embraced digital gaming populations and has left the space to develop and continue without any sort of coherent, organized Christian presence. One way that this can be addressed is to develop Christian collegiate esports programs that can provide meaningful Christian communities for gamers as well as practical paths to educate and equip gamers to play, minister, and work in the gaming industry coram deo.
