Fingerings and the selection of fingerings are one of the most critical aspects of successful clarinet playing. The study of fingering provides multiple benefits to performers. Proper fingerings will give the performer better voicing, balance, air control, body control, embouchure position, hand position, and intonation. Clarinetists who successfully establish proper fingerings will ultimately become more comprehensive musicians. The purpose of this document is to explain and discuss why fingerings have so much effect on performers and how to teach these fingerings to students. This writing will investigate the benefits of learning fingering by exploration of detailed fingerings practice and will enhance the experience of teaching the clarinet. Less experienced players may think fingerings are simply about depressing the correct keys; however, selecting the appropriate fingerings in a passage is complicated, and once accomplished, the clarinetist becomes a highly skilled and marketable performer. Although this document focuses primarily on fingerings for the clarinet, the harmonic series must be explained and introduced to understand the importance of fingering selection. The paper begins with a general discussion of the harmonic series, followed by a discussion of clarinet partials, harmonic system, and hand position. Finally, the document will introduce many clarinet fingerings and explain how to use the harmonic series to select the appropriate clarinet fingerings. The document culminates with an extensive fingering guide useful for clarinetists of all levels, from beginners to seasoned professionals.
