The birdsong is a crucial element in Messiaen's music. Although he used birds as musical motifs throughout his life, most of the scholarship on Messiaen focuses on the 1950s when he began to apply bird sounds to his composition. In this study, I examine the evolution of the roles of the birdsong throughout Messiaen's entire life, exclusively focusing on his piano solo work.This study compares and analyzes such musical elements as harmony, rhythm, tempo, and dynamics, and extra-musical aspects of Messiaen's birdsong. The study will demonstrate that the composer did not merely imitate bird sounds but transcribed them into musical notation, administering them to various roles in his composition. Also, it will discuss how extra-musical symbolic meanings of the bird songs in Messiaen's music can be related to, yet different from, those in art and literature.
