The focus of this dissertation is to examine and discuss the use of contemporary techniques in pieces for the clarinet and bass clarinet and to explore why composers choose to employ them. Current resources on extended (or contemporary) techniques for these instruments are mainly intended for performers seeking to learn how to play these techniques. Even when resources are intended for composers, they often focus on the idiomatic use of these techniques for performers, but the discussion of why a composer might choose to use contemporary techniques in their work is often absent. This dissertation aims to fill this gap by providing composers with a resource that explains how to effectively use contemporary techniques for the clarinet and bass clarinet in their compositions. To better understand how contemporary techniques alter the timbre of the instrument, I conducted spectral analyses of standard sounds and common contemporary techniques on the clarinet and bass clarinet, highlighting the differences in harmonic spectra. After listening to hundreds of works for the clarinet and bass clarinet, I've identified four common ways in which composers utilize contemporary techniques:•to expand the sonic possibilities of the instrument•within electroacoustic pieces•within programmatic pieces•to showcase a new form of virtuosity. Each of these categories is explored in separate chapters, with examples from contemporary composers such as Sungji Hong, Ann Cleare, and Theo Loevendie. Additionally, I share insights into how I have incorporated contemporary techniques in my own compositions.Overall, this dissertation aims to provide composers with a deeper understanding of how to effectively use contemporary techniques for the clarinet and bass clarinet in their compositions. While existing resources have primarily focused on performers learning to utilize these techniques, this work aims to bridge the gap by exploring the reasons and methods behind a composer's choice to incorporate contemporary techniques.
