Socio-idiosyncratic choreography are codified dance steps that are understood within specific populations. Social media apps such as TikTok can be used as a lens to examine this phenomenon of dance move inception and dissemination. Socioidiosyncratic dance steps are social and require an engaged population disseminate their information. They encompass all codified dance steps from pop culture moves like "The Moonwalk" to technical ballet steps such as the "Pas de Bourree."Historically, dance moves were generated in real physical spaces for social gatherings. Dance halls were environments where individual movement exploration could transition to viralness. Dance moves have historically been utilized as an ethics into social dance participation, providing a structure that allows for correct or incorrect participation. When a given population reaches a critical mass of listening these dance steps become solidified. In codifying movement other elements are incorporated and tied to the form. People, place, time and music all get tied to our association when learning specific movement. This leads to a defining of a generational zeitgeist -- taking movement from choreographic ambiguity to codified familiarity. The evolution of dance steps moved from the physical spaces of dance halls to the digital realm. Pop culture artists, music videos and eventually social media apps (TikTok) would go on to become the catalyst in generating and disseminating viral dance steps. These digital spaces run parallel with the structure of socio-idiosyncratic dance steps. They're short, easily repeatable and easily accessible.Cyber Synesthesia was the creative component of this research that aimed at bridging the digital and lived experience. It provided a method for visualizing how movement can transition from the familiar or known to the unknown. This piece also examined the grey area of claiming ownership of viral movement, exploring culturally embodied movement through improvisation practices, and challenging who can claim ownership and reasons for doing so.
