In this thesis, I examine how punk youth culture and the mosh pit provide power and agency for counterculture youth, which when carefully nurtured, facilitated, and harnessed, inspire socio-political change. I propose that by engaging Reggio Emilia, a critical dance pedagogy, with punk culture through teen workshops, punk youth can gain physical and social empowerment and awareness. This dance methodology gives punk youth an opportunity to investigate how their moving bodies are vehicles for social change. Bridging the divide between the physicality embedded in punk culture and the movement vocabulary of dance broadens the reach of movement curriculum to include the youth drawn to punk music's anti-establishment principles. Using Reggio Emilia to articulate the similarities in punk dance structures and concert dance allows dance educators and members of the punk community to strengthen the connection between these two worlds by building from common ground. The DIY (Do It Yourself) venue provides the perfect classroom for this pedagogy to fill the disciplinary and cultural gaps between punk dance and concert dance. In this thesis I explain how to engage the punk youth community with Reggio Emilia by noting my own auto-ethnographic research, as well as providing a blueprint for crafting workshops that integrate concert dance and punk dance elements. Reggio Emilia can help teenage students understand how punk culture in itself is a radical pedagogy for social transformation. Perhaps the stark intermission of punk shows caused by a global virus has presented an opening for new forms of counterculture art to influence punk youth culture, with the hope that punk youth can emerge from this pandemic with a deeper understanding of the power of a moving body.
