Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Chicago, 2021.

This dissertation is a study of job titles in ancient Greece. Historians have often invoked job titles as evidence for ancient society, economic activity, and the like. The present study distinguishes itself from previous scholarship by making job titles themselves the subject of inquiry, posing as its central question, "How did the Greeks use job titles?" Focusing especially on the fifth and fourth centuries BC (but considering material as early as Homer and Hesiod), this work examines a broad range of literary and epigraphic sources, seeking both to describe and to quantify how job titles fit into the broader system of identification practices in the Greek world. Three case studies examine workers in specific occupations-miners, secretaries, and physicians-providing a detailed look at ancient job titles in use.
