The problem addressed in this research was that conventional "successful aging" concepts do not consider the role of biopsychosocial strengths that may impact quality of life in aging. A qualitative interpretive phenomenological research methodology provided a constructive way to expand knowledge about aging well. Semi-structured telephone interviews were conducted with 10 adults born between 1939 and 1964 who scored 8 or above on the Personal Wellbeing Index. An interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA) resulted in 10 themes and five subthemes reflecting the ways participants considered themselves to be aging well despite adversities and lived experiences of biopsychosocial strengths which influenced their resilience. The final theme provided further delineation of how internal psychological resilience and external social connection are intertwined. The balance between independence and belonging was a new outcome of this research. The main recommendation for practice is to consider a more holistic, strength based, person-centered orientation within interventions and to assist aging adults in accessing their strengths. A second suggestion for practice would be to introduce competencies in counselling of aging adults into education programs in avoidance of ageism. The results of this dissertation also recognized that van Manen's four lifeworld existentials represented a holistic method. Strengthening the research agenda of educational integrity could potentially be actualized through IPA. Resilient aging from a biopsychosocial perspective and could also guide further research in specific areas of adversity, such as the intersection of elder abuse and resilience outcomes. The most probable implications for societal outcomes are the ongoing efforts to connect resilience with the positive effect of quality of life in aging. Resilient aging from a BPS perspective implies not only surviving and coping with adversity or challenges as one ages, but thriving past them.
