The aging population is growing exponentially causing greater demands on healthcare. Malnutrition, dysphagia, loss of muscle mass and weakness are prevalent diseases in the aging population. Previous research (Bryun et al., 2019; Fugishima et al., 2019; Hernandez et al., 2015; Nagano et al., 2019; Nishioka et al., 2017; Robinson et al., 2018) have shown that these disorders are highly prevalent in the elderly and that they are associated. Of these diseases, malnutrition is the most prevalent. However, in many cases, it is preventable using screenings and intervention. This study examined secondary data from the National Hospital Discharge Survey of 2008 from the National Center of Health Statistics to examine the associations amongst these variables. It also looked at correlations between these variables and age and days of care. In addition, it examines the frequency of rehabilitative and nutritional interventions used in patients suffering from these diseases. The findings revealed a significant association between the variables of malnutrition, dysphagia and weakness. There was a significant correlation found between malnutrition and age. In addition, significant correlations were found between days of care and malnutrition, dysphagia, loss of muscle mass and weakness. Finally, the study found a disparity regarding intervention where only a small proportion of cases received rehabilitative and nutritional intervention. These research findings not only support previous findings in relation between these disorders could also be a catalyst to the implementation of interdisciplinary screenings, prevention and intervention programs that may subsequently contribute to enhance the quality of life and decreased health care costs in the aging population.
