Background: Musculoskeletal pain is a leading cause of disability and decreased quality of life. The purpose of this meta-analysis was to examine whether cupping massage has a greater effect than static cupping on pain, disability, and quality of life. Methods: A systematic search was performed, and studies were selected after applying inclusion/exclusion criteria. The difference between pre and post Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), Neck Disability Index (NDI), and Physical Component Score (PCS) of the SF-36 (Short-form 36) scores were used to calculate effect sizes and confidence intervals. Forest plots were used to visualize the findings. Results: The VAS and PCS findings were insignificant (p>0.05). The VAS had a small effect size (0.22) favoring static cupping and was heterogenous (I2=86%). The PCS had a small effect size (-0.03) favoring cupping massage and was homogenous (I2=0%). The NDI findings were significant (p<0.05) and had a large effect size (-0.88) favoring cupping massage and was homogenous (I2=0%). Conclusion: The VAS and PCS grand effect sizes were small and statistically insignificant while the NDI had a large effect size favoring cupping massage. Therefore, we can conclude that there is no difference in effect between the two interventions on pain and quality of life. However, cupping massage appears to be superior to decreasing disability in the neck. Future studies should focus on larger sample sizes and more specific body parts to draw more definitive conclusions.
