Obesity is a global crisis associated with developing chronic conditions and poor health outcomes (Semlitsch et al., 2019). The project aimed to examine the impact of walking as a physical activity to reduce body mass index (BMI) and motivate patients to exercise daily. The Planned Behavior (TPB) theory is the framework used to guide this project. A quantitative methodology with a pre-and post-implementation approach was applied in the project to enable the collection of the baseline and end-line data. A sample size of 30 participants was selected through the convenience sampling technique. Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 26 was used to compute the descriptive and inferential statistics. A paired sample t-test was performed at a 95% significance level, and the findings revealed a statistically significant difference in the BMI levels after the implementation of the walking exercise, t (26) = 4.925, p = .000, revealing the effectiveness of the intervention. A one-sample t-test was computed, and the findings did not reveal a statistically significant difference in the means when compared to 10,000 steps, t (26) = -.332, p = 0.742. The implication for practice is the application of mHealth such as mobile phone applications that monitor the progress of physical activity with the aim to reduce the weight and BMI of participants as well as improve their general health.
