Food allergies are one of the most common chronic health conditions among children and adolescents in the US, with an estimated prevalence of 5-8% among youth ages 0-17 years (Jackson et al., 2013). Food allergies not only have detrimental effects on children's physical health, but also negatively impact their social-emotional functioning and quality of life (QOL) (Morou et al., 2014). In addition, food allergies often have adverse effects for parents and families, as they can interfere with activities, routines, and relationships both within and outside the family (Valentine & Knibb, 2011). Thus, research indicates that pediatric food allergies can have negative implications for both child and parent QOL. An aim of the study was to understand whether certain demographic factors have associations with parent and parental report of child food-allergy associated health-related QOL (FA-associated HR-QOL) specifically. Additionally, other aims were to examine these relationships between parent and child FA-associated HR-QOL and emotional distress from a parent's perspective, with consideration for the possible moderating role of parents' psychological flexibility. The results from this research are beneficial in understanding connections between parental report of child and parent FA-associated HR-QOL as well as between parent and child emotional distress and also in understanding the potential effects of psychological flexibility on food-allergy associated HR-QOL and emotional distress within this population. These results might be valuable in helping families of children with FA develop more effective coping strategies and in shaping evidence-based psychological interventions for these families.
