Cancer is a serious and life-altering disease. Many in the scientific community have endeavored to provide insights into a variety of patient experiences in this devastating disease. In recent years, much attention has focused on the impact of positive thinking on patient coping, cancer risk, and survival. Some have suggested that an emphasis on remaining positive in the face of serious illness may inadvertently lead to a social perception that patients are responsible for their disease outcome. Although studies examining the relationship between positive thinking and cancer are prevalent, research examining patient emotional expression and social perception of cancer is lacking. The current investigation examined the effect of cancer patient emotional expression on social perception of patient disease control, responsibility, length of struggle, and predicted disease outcome. It was hypothesized that participants would perceive cancer patients who expressed "negative" emotions such as anger, sadness, or fear, as having increased disease responsibility and control, a longer struggle with the disease, and a greater likelihood for negative disease outcome than patients who expressed "positive" emotions. Significant effects were found between patient emotional expression and perception of disease control and prediction of disease outcome. Patients who displayed positive emotions were perceived as more likely to have a positive cancer outcome than patients who displayed anger. Patients who displayed anger were perceived as having greater disease control than patients who displayed sadness. Implications and applications for current findings are discussed.
