Holistic treatment models and clinical interventions in talk therapy for persons diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have historically not been given adequate clinical attention (Agarwal & Sarthi, 2020; Maiese, 2012) Pharmaceutical treatments have traditionally been the first line of recommended treatment (Bergey & Conrad, 2018; Maiese, 2012) As the criteria and scope of diagnosis for ADHD has changed, research is increasingly identifying effective treatment models outside of and in combination with pharmaceutical treatments (Fullen et al., 2020). This study explores participant; client and practitioner; lived experiences of holistic treatment models, interventions, and modalities being used by persons diagnosed with ADHD. Through a qualitative constructivist grounded theory methodology, and a semi-structured interview process, this study explored treatment models which provide relevant holistic intervention and support for positive symptom outcomes for individuals diagnosed with ADHD. Seven client participants and three counselor practitioner participants were interviewed. Attention to multicultural, developmental and lifespan perspectives, and a strengths-based lens are evident throughout this study. Theoretical concepts emerge from this inquiry from the shared lived experiences of stakeholders of mental health. The six categories that emerged from the data are: A Lifelong Journey; A History with and without Medication; Towards Wholeness: Wellness and Self-Care; A Strengths-Based Perspective; Intersectionality; and A Cognitive Behavioral Approach. Significantly, wellness and self-care practices and cognitive behavioral approaches emerge as important holistic alternative approaches in addressing ADHD symptoms. Research analysis and the creation of constructivist grounded theory have significant implications for counselor supervision and education and training. Individuals diagnosed with ADHD and practitioners in the field see benefits from these research findings related to holistic treatment modalities.
