Clinical counseling supervision is a professional collaboration and mentoring support from an experienced counselor with the goal of assisting early-career counselors to develop their counseling skills and counselor identity in a safe environment while working to mutually protect the interests of the client. Supervision has been addressed in literature with findings that it can be harmful; however, there were few studies that addressed supervision from the perspective of early-career counselors. To gain better understanding of early-career counselors' perceptions of supervision, a qualitative research design was used to answer the question "What are the perceptions of professional counselor supervisees who have been compelled to change supervisors due to a perceived lack of efficacy in case conceptualization?" Erik Erikson's theory of psychosocial development provided a lens to understand how early-career counselors experiences with supervision affect their professional development and identity development. Erikson understood identity as a person's own ability to create meaning of their self through lenses such as place and time. This perspective becomes relevant to early-career counselors as they develop their own professional sense of self. Early-career counselors from across the United States who had changed supervisors due to feeling that they lacked efficacy in case conceptualization were invited to participate. Data was gathered using semi-structured open-ended interviews of 10 participants. Thematic analysis was completed by hand for themes that emerged from the data. Quirkos software was used to confirm the themes and sub-themes. Findings indicated the behaviors of supervisors that were unhelpful and helpful were reported to influence early-career counselor's abilities to conceptualize cases, develop skills, increase theoretical understanding, and develop a professional counselor identity. It was found that not all supervisors provided supervision in a manner perceived as competent by their supervisees and had potential to cause distress to their supervisee by misusing power differentials, engaging in unethical behaviors, and lacking cultural competencies. These harmful behaviors were perceived to cause early-career counselors to experience the psychosocial crisis of role confusion. Experiencing the behaviors of the first supervisor created distress to the early-career counselor and developed fear that reporting or challenging the supervisor in any way would lead to harm to career or career suicide. Additionally, it was found that changing supervisors was reported to be beneficial in helping the early-career counselor to overcome their initial distress and develop a stronger counselor identity.
