The historical novel is a prominent genre in the Russian tradition. It both contributes to the country's literary canon and plays an important role in the history of literature. The genre comes to the forefront of Russian belles lettres in quantitative terms and popularity twice during the nineteenth century: in the 1830's, and in the 1870's and 80's. Turn-of-the-century works are not as numerous; however, they also constitute a visible phenomenon. Despite its importance, the genre is understudied, since existing scholarship mostly concentrates on "major" writers. In addition, there are no satisfactory general works. Therefore, I cover the period from the origins of the historical novel in Russia up to 1917. I also draw on a wide range of authors, including Zagoskin, Bulgarin, Lazhechnikov, Polevoi, Vel'tman, Pushkin, Aleksei Tolstoi, Lev Tolstoi, Salias, Danilevskii, Mordovtsev, Vsevolod Solov'ev, Briusov, Merezhkovskii. The main focus of the work is the evolution of the poetics of the genre, at the core of which lie particular modes of interaction between fiction and history. This interaction, which has become a topic of intense theoretical exploration in application to historiography (Danto, Hayden White, et al.), generates a peculiar dynamics of the "documental literature" (Lidiia Ginzburg). I argue that, despite the existence of what Bakhtin calls the "memory of the genre," the development of the historical novel does not represent a continuous "linear" process, but falls into three periods with their own distinct poetics based on more general literary and cultural paradigms: Romanticism, Realism, Symbolism. Historical novels of various periods share common elements; however, these elements--to use Tynianov's terminology--acquire different functions, depending on the larger system which they enter. The Romantic historical novel is informed by the Romantic binary picture of the world and Romantic irony. The Realistic historical novel is based on a monistic outlook and the "scientific" penchant of the epoch. And the Symbolist novel--merging history and art in search for eternal correspondences--becomes as much mythological as historical. Proving these ideas, I view the genre in a broad contemporary context, which includes pertinent trends in historiography and contemporary readers' perceptions.
