The present study will examine Remizov's work in the years of war and revolution, with particular attention to the novel Kanava as well as other roughly contemporary works: Rossija v pis'menax, Vesennee poros'e, Sredi mur'ja, and the "Slovo o pogibeli russkoj zemli." Remizov abandons the novel and casts about for other narrative forms: in each of his experiments with genre, the act of writing resembles the creation of a palimpsest, in the sense of a text that somehow re-writes or extends an earlier work. This writing in the margins of archaic texts amounts to a strategy of conscious anachronism, a reappropriation of the genre system and linguistic heritage of earlier stages in the history of literary discourse. Precisely this orientation toward a kind of literary archeology motivates the reimagination of the boundaries of genre and literariness that makes Remizov one of the seminal innovators of Russian modernist prose. Each chapter therefore in some way emphasizes the problem of recovering the perspective of contemporary reception, in order to respond to the larger need to explore the culturological dynamics of a remarkable threshhold period in Russian literary history.
