The poetry of Georgij Ivanov presents many obstacles to the literary scholar, not the least of which is the schism created by his emigration. Although the two halves of his oeuvre seem quite different, this dissertation demonstrates that Ivanov's pre-emigration and post-emigration poetry are united by a common worldview and by similar treatment of space and time. This unity is revealed by examining a major theme which recurs throughout Ivanov's work: exile. The evolution of this theme is examined in each stage of Ivanov's work. Although most critics agree that exile is one of the prominent themes of Ivanov's emigre poetry, it can also be found in poetry written long before he left Russia. Physical separation from one's homeland is not its only manifestation. Ivanov's earliest collections convey the image of an intangible "other" world, and exile is manifested in the longing of the poet-persona to reach that world. In Ivanov's poetry the other world is most often encountered in pastorals, a form which proves ideal for the expression of exilic longing; many posit nostalgia as the defining element of this poetic form. The pastoral haven serves as a refuge from the relentless progress of history in exilic reality. Even when Arcadia has long been abandoned as the setting for Ivanov's other world, the elements associated with it remain. They are transferred to Ivanov's poetic projection of pre-revolutionary Russia and, finally, to the afterlife. The pastoral longing for "home" is the predominate theme of Ivanov's entire lifework. The exilic awareness of two places and two time periods throughout Ivanov's poetry explains its unique linguistic quality. The seemingly senseless juxtaposition of opposites is a logical result of Ivanov's exilic "double vision," which produces a series of antitheses throughout his work: banal and lyrical, exile and home, death and rebirth. These oxymoronic pairs are simply the poet's lyrical expression of the "distorted reflection" which faces him in exile. This duality culminates in Ivanov's contrast of the true "Petersburg pastoral" with anti-pastoral descriptions of France in his final work.
