Many critics regard Richard Wright as a significant yet unrefined writer. This paper challenges this popular opinion and foregrounds Wright's various literary attempts. To do so, I classify Wright's early works into literary genres, connecting them with works of Harlem Renaissance writers such as George Schuyler, Zora Neale Hurston, Rudolph Fisher, and Langston Hughes and white writers such as James M. Cain and James Joyce. Through the classification, I argue that Wright adopts many literary genres, such as proletarian literature, satire, biblical narrative, crime fiction, and the Kunstlerroman (the novel of the artist). Chapter 1 compares Schuyler's Black No More with Wright's Lawd Today! and foregrounds their satirical critique of racial capitalism, which means capitalism does not erase racialized differences but increases the differences to exploit minority people. Chapter 2 compares Hurston's "The Fire and the Cloud" and Moses, Man of the Mountain with Wright's "Fire and Cloud" and "Bright and Morning Star," short stories in Uncle Tom's Children. I argue that while Hurston criticizes common African-American people's reliance on leadership and highlights the importance of their internal freedom, Wright believes in people's resistant power, referring to Black Christianity and communism. Chapter 3 analyzes Fisher's The Conjure-Man Dies, Cain's The Postman Always Rings Twice, and Wright's Native Son, categorizing them as crime fiction. Through the comparison, I demonstrate that Native Son utilizes a format of the crime novel and criticizes the American legal system's racism. Chapter 4 situates Wright's autobiographical novel, Black Boy (American Hunger), in a genealogy of the Kunstlerroman. I refer to Joyce's Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and Hughes's The Big Sea as Kunstlerromane preceding Wright's novel.
