This thesis explores the idea that play is effective in helping young children build their literacy development. The work brings together different types of play and examines research that shows how these different types of play help children build different literacy skills. The thesis includes a professional development that walks participants through different ways that one can implement play in early childhood classrooms to help students build their literacy skills. The work also includes an analysis of a compilation of feedback from educational professionals who participated in the professional development as well as their own thoughts on play in education. Finally, the work concludes with implications and ideas for future research.
