The purpose of this study was to analyze leadership education and skill development of Roman Catholic priests, identify possible limitations and challenges specifically relating to administration and management, and to make recommendations for improved preparation. While the primary role of the priest is to be a spiritual leader, as pastors and administrators, they are responsible for the temporal needs and resources of parishes and schools where they have been assigned. Because their seminary education focuses on philosophy, theology, scripture, and pastoral care, there seems to be a lack of preparation for them to be effective leaders, managers, and administrators. Through semi-structured interviews, those with firsthand experience of seminary education and the challenges priests face as pastors and administrators provided important insight related to this topic. Several significant themes emerged from the data which can hopefully benefit those responsible for seminary education and clergy formation. While significant challenges exist for pastors as they exercise leadership, administration, and management, various avenues for support are available. Additionally, participants offered suggestions for the future, such as delegating some of the managerial and administrative responsibilities to competent lay persons. Recommendations for further research have also been considered.
