Obtaining a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree can be an expensive endeavor that often requires a significant amount of student loan debt to complete. Unfortunately, there is no requirement to be financially knowledgeable before borrowing large amounts of money. The purpose of this study was to explore third-year DPT students' financial literacy, loan debt burden, and whether debt burden caused a high degree of stress. The researcher used the Financial Literacy and Financial Education Theoretical Framework as the basis for this study. A quantitative, cross-sectional, comparative, closed-ended survey was used to evaluate 60 third-year DPT students from public and private universities in Mississippi, Arkansas, and Tennessee. Data analysis revealed that third-year DPT students had significant student loan debt, poor levels of financial literacy, and moderate amounts of stress. However, there were no significant differences between third-year DPT students' financial literacy and the average American. Findings from the study also indicated there was not a statistically significant difference between financial literacy and perceived stress in students with less than $100,000 of student loan debt or greater than $100,000 in student loan debt. With the considerable student loan debt, poor levels of financial literacy, and moderate amounts of stress discovered, implications of the study include the need to provide financial literacy and money management training as part of DPT coursework.
