Purpose - This study investigates (i) the influence collaborative storytelling games have on preexisting team effectiveness, (ii) teams desire to use collaborative storytelling games as team building activities and (iii) an exploration into narrative pivoting has on teams.Design/methodology/approach - This is a mixed methods study using test-retest, gameplay observation and participant experience through coded, short form response of nineteen (19) participants, across three (3) teams of convenience.Findings - The study did not collect enough data to make conclusions about team effectiveness. Although there may have been an unintended introduction of social desirability bias, teams unanimously would like to engage with For the Queen and other collaborative storytelling games again. Qualitatively, the participants did not believe that gameplay "help[ed] the team" but it supported trust, collaboration, and cohesion, all important attributes of strong teams.Practical implications - The study provides support for For the Queen and possibly other storytelling games as a team building activity to improve creativity, collaboration, and cohesion in a team environment.
