In 1741, Johann Sebastian Bach published the Aria mit verschiedenen Veranderungen, BWV 988, (Aria with Diverse Variations), popularly known as the Goldberg Variations. This monumental, intricately designed set, consisting of an Aria with thirty variations for harpsichord, has become one of the most hallowed works of the keyboard literature. This paper traces the elements of ground bass and song variation traditions in the Goldberg Variations, in addition to the origins of its distinctive keyboard virtuosity, especially the hand crossing. The paper discusses ground bass variations which feature the same eight-bar bass line that begins each movement of the Goldberg Variations. These works include Henry Purcell's A Ground in Gamut, Z. 645, George Frideric Handel's two Chaconnes in G Major, HWV 435 and HWV 442, and Francois Couperin's "Les Folies Francoises, ou les dominos." Connections with the Sarabande with twelve variations by Bach's uncle, Johann Christoph Bach are also explored. In reference to song variation tradition, the paper examines Girolamo Frescobaldi's Bergamasca from Fiori musicali of Venice 1635 and Dietrich Buxtehude's thirty-two partite diverse in G major, La Capricciosa, BuxWV 250, both which feature the Bergamasca tune found in Bach's Variation 30, a quodlibet. Finally, the paper re-thinks the connections between the music of Scarlatti, Couperin, Rameau, and the Goldberg Variations, regarding the explicit keyboard virtuosity and hand-crossing techniques. Many scholars have surmised the connection between Scarlatti's Essercizi and Bach's Goldberg Variations because of the virtuosity in both works, requiring consummate mastery of hand crossing. Perhaps Scarlatti's keyboard virtuosity has overshadowed the legacy of his contemporaries, such as Rameau and Couperin, who also contributed their own hand-crossing innovations. The discovery of Rameau's Nouvelles suites de pieces de clavecin (1729/30), containing the famous hand-crossing piece, "Les Trois mains," and the virtuosic "Gavotte avec les doubles de la gavotte" in Bach's library has important implications for the extraordinary keyboard figurations and techniques found in the Goldberg Variations.
