For many Africans, the elusive dream of basketball superstardom became imaginable following the breakthrough success of NBA legends Hakeem Olajuwon and Dikembe Mutombo. These homegrown stars also helped lay the foundation for corporate social responsibility initiatives like Basketball Without Borders (BWB) being hosted in Africa. In turn, initiatives like these paved the way for new superstars, including reigning league MVP and BWB alum Joel Embiid. Focusing on BWB, this research aimed to (1) gain further insight into BWB's impact on levels of sport participation and (2) investigate whether participation numbers vary based on age and gender. This study employed an exploratory secondary data research design to investigate overall participation trends at BWB sites as well as compare age and gender membership rates provided by local basketball federations. This data provided a glimpse into the expansion of the sport before and after hosting BWB, with South Africa showing an initial decline in participation but recent growth, Senegal demonstrating minimal change, and Egypt's participation rates growing pre-BWB and decreasing post-BWB. The only statistically significant difference regarding age group participation was seen in Egypt, while similar differences regarding gender were seen in South Africa and Senegal. Further research on this topic is critical to shed more light on the growth of the sport on the continent, including the recently inaugurated Basketball Africa League.
