Stagnant test-driven teaching materials and curricula can have a detrimental impact on teacher morale and engagement. The purpose of this Action Research study was to examine and strengthen the impact of teacher input in the curriculum development and materials selection process in the Mission Public School System. Participants and data collected in Cycle 1 consisted of language arts teachers who volunteered to be a part of semi-structured interviews and public facing documents collected from the district website. Based on the data collected, action steps were designed, carried out, and evaluated in Cycle 2. Meeting dates were used as common learning experiences where participants reviewed common materials and established goals and outcomes of the unit revision process. Participants then worked collaboratively to revise the selected unit of study based on new learning and established goals. The study concluded that when using culturally relevant teaching practices as a foundation, it addressed the perceived content area burden and encouraged teacher participation, communication, engagement and trust.
