This document considers Hector Berlioz and his song cycle Les Nuits d'ete, especially Berlioz's method of interpreting the meaning of the text in the music. For these songs, Berlioz set poems by Theophile Gautier. The composer agreed with Gautier's intentions in creating poetry, particularly the way that he painted pictures with words. Berlioz endeavored to express the deep meaning of these poems in his music. This is a consideration of how Berlioz tried to present the images reflected in Gautier's texts through analysis of many musical details in his songs, a demonstration of the composer's own literary understanding and compositional ingenuity. The document concludes with a consideration of recordings of Les Nuits d'ete by sopranos Kiri Te Kanawa and Regine Crespin, the analysis demonstrating what the singer can learn from their contrasting approaches to the work.
