This master's thesis project focuses on redesigning the private All Saints Church courtyard in Sunnyside, Queens into a semi-public pocket park that incorporates the community's interests of art, music, and play. Working directly with the Western Queens Community Land Trust and gathering survey input from the Sunnyside community, this thesis prioritizes the wants and needs of the residents. Research methods including site visits, observations, literature reviews, case studies, and community survey input were conducted to answer the following three questions: 1) How can pocket parks serve as high-quality green spaces that can improve the overall well-being of a community? 2) What are the interests of the Sunnyside community? 3) How can the private courtyard at All Saints Church be redesigned as a semi-public pocket park that embraces Sunnyside's passion for art and music while maintaining a safe play environment for children at the daycare? The outcome of this research is a final proposed design, Sunnyside Pocket Park, which serves as a high-quality community hub by increasing the overall social, mental, and environmental well-being of the neighborhood. The existing non-ADA compliant church courtyard is transformed into a flexible, universally accessible urban green space that aligns with the Sunnyside community's interests and is inclusive for people of all age ranges and abilities.
