It is not known if, and to what extent, self-verification processes occur in Generation Z's use of Instagram. Self-verification theory suggests that individuals want others to view them the same way they view themselves, and self-verifying feedback is obtained through interpersonal interactions. These interactions are now able to occur online. Members of Gen Z, born between 1997 and 2012, are unique because they have had access to social media throughout their lifetimes. This quantitative, correlational study looked at the older members of Gen Z, between ages 18 and 25, and how self-verification related to their use of Instagram, specifically Rinsta and Finsta accounts. Rinstas, "Real" Instagram profiles that are often public, and Finstas, "Fake" Instagram profiles that are private, offer different contexts for gaining self-verifying feedback. In this study, self-verification processes were represented by authenticity, social comparison, and self-presentation. Intrinsic spirituality, an internalized relationship with a higher power that impacts decision-making and meaning making, was also considered. Eligible participants had both a Rinsta and Finsta account and completed the following measures via online survey: The Authenticity Scale, The Iowa-Netherlands Comparison Orientation Measure, The Intrinsic Spirituality Scale, the General Social Media Usage subscale of the Media and Technology Usage and Attitudes Scale, and the Real Self and False Self-Deception subscales of the Self-Presentation on Facebook Questionnaire. Scales were modified to specifically measure Rinsta and Finsta use. Spearman's Rho correlation analyses and multiple regression analyses were conducted to determine relationships among the identified variables. Two regression models were identified and indicated the following: 1) As levels of authenticity and social comparison increased, Rinsta use also increased and 2) Lower levels of authenticity and higher levels of self-presentation led to higher levels of Finsta use. Intrinsic spirituality was not found to be significantly correlated with Gen Z's Instagram use. Findings can help mental health counselors gain insight into the ways that Gen Z utilizes their Instagram profiles and verifies self-concepts, informing case conceptualization, treatment goals, and therapeutic interventions.
