Thesis (M.A.)--Pratt Institute, 2024.
Includes bibliographical references
This thesis investigates curriculum design in two parts. The first is a Unit of Study designed for 11th to 12th graders based on the theme of identity expressed through rituals. The curriculum draws its conceptual framework from contemporary artists Lisa Reihana, Wendy Red-Star, and Martine Gutierrez, whose work engages with the idea of identity in relation to others. The second part is a case study conducted by a three-person research team (including the author) concerning the relationship between the planned and operational curriculum as deployed by an art teacher in a New York City public middle school. The findings from the case study indicate that the gap between the intended and operational curriculum can be reduced through teacher practices such as; deep knowledge of the student body and their contexts for learning, a strong reflective practice as well as the use of transparent student self- assessment tools such as rubrics and checklists.
