Students at the elementary school level often need help improving their problem-solving skills. This study includes research that answers the question: "How does teaching STEM and the engineering design process improve problem-solving skills in 5th grade students?" The students were engaged with an astronomy STEM unit that included an engineering design process. The students were given a pre and post test that measured their perception of their problem-solving abilities before and after the STEM unit was taught. A rubric was also used to measure the students' problem-solving abilities based on teacher observations of the students' oral and written responses. The results of this study show that there is an overall improvement in the problem-solving skills of 5th grade students after being taught the unit.
