This thesis applies community input for participatory re-design of a Complete Street, focusing on those who are experiencing homelessness with a design research project that redesigns North Avenue in Athens, Georgia. The cart method, a collage activity, and a survey determined the homeless community preferences of Athens, GA (n=50), regarding redesign. Six themes emerged that informed design: infrastructure, cultural, and vegetative aspects of Complete Streets, community buildings, community gathering, and community amenities. StreetLight InSight, CLASIC, and ArcGIS provided data on North Avenue, stormwater management, and site inventory. North Avenue is an arterial road, with heavy traffic passing over the North Oconee River bridge. A possible redesign included community amenities, bridge repair, and stormwater control measures. The North Avenue project will be continued by Athens-Clarke County and offers an opportunity for future design students to further investigate how to include people experiencing homelessness in the design process.
