Gender-Based Violence (GBV) is a pandemic that has existed in humans' lives for generations due to gendered ideologies. According to World Health data, one in three women has experienced some form of psychological/physical/sexual violence. The effects of GBV have grown more devastating, running in parallel with COVID-19 due to lockdown measures and government movement restrictions. Kenya was no exception. Evidence demonstrated by the World Health Organization and the United Nations shows that the COVID-19 pandemic has played a primary and secondary effect on violence against women and girls. Critical evidence gaps from both the COVID-19 pandemic and other similar outbreaks include: (1) limited data on how levels of violence change; (2) lack of disaggregated data, particularly for vulnerable groups such as adolescent girls, older women, women, and girls with disabilities, and refugee/migrant women; (3) limited research on the pathways of violence and how outbreaks can exacerbate different formsivof violence against women and girls; and (4) few documented examples of good practice in preventing and responding to violence against women and girls during an outbreak. Abuse is about power and control; an abuser can use any tool to exert that power and control, including a global health concern, such as COVID-19. The violence that is intentionally committed is a product of power control, stemming from inequality between men and women with varying levels of inequality and power. Violence is rooted in discrimination and inequities upheld by individual attitudes, beliefs, and practices; broader social norms around gender and violence; and systems and structures replicating and codifying the inequality and discrimination. This dissertation aims to understand the intersectoral risk factors of psychosocial, socioeconomic, environmental, and the further impact on societal, community, and interpersonal factors that impacted women of vulnerable populations residing in rural communities of Kenya during the mandatory lockdowns and movement restrictions. Furthermore, the research delves into how GBV affects Kenya's chances of meeting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the social mobility of a country. Finally, it demonstrates the need to develop new leadership approaches that will change the patriarchal cultural and social norms that contribute to the perpetuation of Gender-Based Violence.
