Ghana possesses abundant gold deposits. Nevertheless, its economy is lower-middle-income. About 6.6 million people, making 22% of Ghana's 30.832 million population, in 2021, live in extreme poverty; and mostly in rural areas. Artisanal and Small-scale Gold Mining (ASGM) is posited as a possible solution to rural poverty in Ghana. Despite contributing 35% of Ghana's gold export and providing livelihood to about a 4.5million people, ASGM has left trails of land degradation, water pollution, mercury toxification, and unschooled youth. This study fills the literature gap of ASGM's long-term effects on rural mining communities. It used a hermeneutic phenomenology and qualitative semi-structured interview method. It collected data from interviewing fourteen people representing six social domains from Hiawa community, a typical ASGM enclave, to explore how their lived experiences demonstrate that ASGM mitigates or aggravates rural poverty. The findings revealed that ASGM mitigates rural poverty in the short run by providing employment, quick access to money in times of shocks, and boosting the local economy. However, ASGM aggravates poverty in the long run through land degradation, biodiversity destruction, apathy to common goods, food and water insecurity, poor community health, cultural alienation, uneducated and morbid rural population, and counteracts the sustainable development goals (SDGs). Leadership is blamed for failing to implement the laws meant to safeguard the industry. The study recommends zoning the country into four regarding mining, forming networks to hold the government responsible for distributive and environmental justice, and an ecological education syllabus. The study exposes readers to how ASGM can ameliorate or deteriorate rural dwellers' livelihoods, some bases for evaluating ASGM's social impact on rural mining communities, and leadership gaps in managing ASGM in Ghana.
