According to the American Council on Education, four percent of the overall national community college enrollment is student veterans. As the troop drawdown continues, research shows these veterans will continue to return to college in increasing numbers. Student veterans have similar risk factors associated with non-completion of a post-secondary credential as non-veteran adult students. These risk factors include part-time enrollment, full-time employment, and family obligations. Additionally, student veterans struggle with the transition from the military to the academic culture. This dissertation employs a systematic review to discuss student veteran transition and the challenges associated with completing a post-secondary credential in a timely manner. An expert panel provided guidance on the content and focus of the research. The research also included the 4S Theory of Transition by Schlossberg as well as Chen's theory of adult learning which incorporates Mezirow's transformative learning theory, and Magolda's ideas on self-authorship. These theories provide an understanding of the dilemma faced by community colleges when determining the most effective support for the transition, persistence, and completion of student veterans. The results of the research revealed that the greatest challenge for student veterans is managing the transition from the military to an academic culture. Specific areas of concern included managing financial resources, especially to support families, developing social interactions with peers, and navigating physical and mental healthcare needs through the Veterans Administration healthcare system. Recommendations for supporting student veterans call for holistic services that include admissions, financial aid, and advising, along with a student veterans' lounge or center, administrative support for veteran initiatives on campus, and professional development for faculty and staff.
