Born in 1578 in Bologna, Francesco Albani became one of the leading young artists to emerge from the Carracci Academy. His career began in Bologna, and was established in Rome from 1600 to 1618. Albani returned to Bologna and worked until his death in 1660 as a painter of altarpieces and cabinet pictures. Esteemed in his own lifetime and in the eighteenth century, Albani was compared to Guido Reni, Domenichino and Guercino. Yet despite his former reputation and the quality of the paintings, Albani has been neglected in the modern scholarship. Dismissed in the nineteenth century as a decorative painter, Albani has still to enjoy the rehabilitation accorded recently to Guido Reni and Domenichino. Although steps have been taken since World War II to define Albani's oeuvre, this is the first comprehensive study of the artist which presents a synthesis of his development, an examination of the critical issues posed by his career, and a catalogue of paintings. In chapter one, the major works are introduced. This discussion, based on new discoveries and a fresh examination, presents the artist's stylistic influences and concerns. Chapter two addresses the problem of Albani's art historical role. Early writings on Albani and his own thoughts are studied to understand those qualities for which his art was distinguished. Albani's excellence in invenzione was singled out for unanimous praise. Thus, a more accurate view of Albani emerges as a literate painter who impressed his critics and patrons. Chapters three and four investigate two major Bolognese religious commissions, and three landscape cycles. Indeed, Albani's learned approach to narrative confirms the testimony of the sources. Furthermore, his variants on a composition were an innovative marketing device which served the demands of his patrons and his own creative need to invent novel interpretations of traditional subjects. Part two includes a catalogue of paintings, two appendices, an index of works by location, a select bibliography, plates, and comparative figures. Individual commissions are discussed in detail in the catalogue where related documents, literature and drawings are cited.
