Across creative industries, the emphasis on perceived value perpetuates systemic inequalities, reinforcing existing power structures and making it difficult for underrepresented artists to gain recognition and financial success. In the current saturated art market, many talented but underrepresented artists produce high-quality work that may go unnoticed without effective marketing and promotion. This reality requires artists to spend significant time on marketing, detracting from time spent creating new work. Consequently, an artist with less skill but better marketing skills may achieve greater success. These issues were explored in a practice-as-research art project, "Drift" (2022), in which the artist coined the term "mural mapping" to describe the work. The project aimed to find strategies to assist emerging artists in using content-driven apps. Ultimately, it identified how algorithm curation apps both aid and exacerbate the issue. Based on the experience of making this work and its exposure on social media platforms the project has spawned a new work that is a logical birth of the initial project, "Kody Mattei" (2023-Ongoing). The research conducted throughout the paper suggests various ways to redistribute finances across the art industry based on an artist's merit rather than perceived value.
