The e-cigarette use among U.S. adults is prevalent. The impacts on public health posed by e-cigarette need further research. Perceiving e-cigarette use as a less harmful alternative to combustible cigarette could potentially increase e-cigarette use. It is crucil to also include other perceptions such as perceived benefits, perceived harmfulness, and perceived norms when considering different determinants of e-cigarette use. Furthermore, the concern and potential of e-cigarette use as a gateway to using other substances such as marijuana should also be thoroughly examined. This dissertation study consists of two studies: Study 1 used the first three waves of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health study to evaluate the effect of overall e-cigarette perceptions, comprised of perceived benefits, perceived harmfulness, and perceived norms, on adult e-cigarette use. In order to test the e-cigarette-to-marijuana gateway hypothesis, Study 2 was a retrospective study with longitudinal analytic approach which captured the effects of e-cigarette/marijuana use and potential subsequent marijuana/e-cigarette use initiation, re-initiation, and persistence.Study 1 discovered that prior e-cigarette perception could influence later e-cigarette perception. Moreover, Study 1 also discovered that prior e-cigarette perception at Wave 1 was not associated with e-cigarette use at Wave 3. However, the path from Wave 1 e-cigarette perception to Wave 3 e-cigarette use via Wave 2 e-cigarette perception could be observed. Study 2 found that the use of e-cigarette could lead to marijuana use re-initiation among prior marijuana users who had stopped using marijuana for 12 months at baseline. The e-cigarette use initiation and marijuana use initiation were bi-directional within the same timeframe. The assumption of sequencing and escalation from a substance lower in drug class to one higher in the chain do not completely apply to the results of Study 2. This may imply that the concept of common liability factors such as genetic, environmental, or social factors could also contribute to substance use behavior. These findings could be utilized as references for future e-cigarette perceptions and interventions studies to curb the e-cigarette use prevalence from increasing or could serve as direct evidence for the importance to revisiting the gateway hypothesis of substance use.
