This document explores the uncanny, surrealism, cognitive metaphor, existential challenge, openness, and receptivity as they relate to contemporary dance performance work. Autoethnographic, scholarly, qualitative, and practice-based creative research are woven together to create knowledge and new questions to pursue. The creative research draws on patterns of various choreographic projects, but primarily focuses on the culminating thesis work, Handstitched Electric, choreographed by Virginia Broyles and presented December 2-4, 2021 at the Marriott Center for Dance at the University of Utah. Handstitched Electric is a surrealist performance work that lives in the space between familiar and unfamiliar, collaging images and events together that surprise. The work seeks to entertain and delight while accessing and unraveling metaphors, beliefs, and meaning-making structures. Viewers are invited to indulge in dream logic, illusion, and nostalgia - softly redirecting and undercutting expectations along the way. Aesthetic encounters with the uncanny can shift cognitive metaphors and meaning-making structures by awakening existential challenges around meaning and absurdity. Sometimes our structures are too rigid and we reject information that doesn't fit. Tools like entertainment, humor, and nostalgia can help open perspectives when we feel the friction of familiar/unfamiliar. It helps when we recognize something within the work, ourselves, an image, or a sound. Disarmed by humor of nostalgia, the strange newness can be incorporated into our sense of self and, in doing so, expand it.
