In dense plantings, competition for sunlight causes changes in plant development known as the Shade Avoidance Syndrome (SAS). Plants undergoing SAS are typically more susceptible to disease, indicating a connection between shade and defense. However, the molecular interplay between disease susceptibility and shade-induced elongation is mostly unknown. Previously, we identified an interesting regulatory module involved in SAS that was enriched for genes relating to salicylic acid (SA)-dependent disease resistance. Here, I examined one member of this module, XB3 ortholog 4 (XBAT34). We found that xbat34 mutants are significantly impaired in SAS in a photoperiod-dependent manner. Additionally, this impairment is specific to shade-induced petiole elongation in adult plants.
