The "Master Narrative" of American History, as presented by Ronald Takaki (1993), comes as a result of generations of "whitewashing" history, perpetuated by settler colonial systems of education. Natives are disproportionally affected by this phenomenon, to the point that they are often entirely left out of the narrative or so badly distorted that deleterious stereotypes replace Native truth. The combination of this outright omission and generations of pervasive stereotyping leaves them highly susceptible to prejudice and discrimination. While education has previously been shown as a potentially effective interventional tool to mitigate prejudicial attitudes, very little work has been done to investigate the potential role of education in mitigating prejudicial attitudes towards Natives in particular. Original survey data was used to examine the role of completing an Introduction to Native American Studies course at the college level to decrease prejudicial attitudes towards Natives. Using Multi Level Modeling (MLM), this study found that there was a statistically significant (p<.05) reduction in prejudicial attitudes towards Natives among college students who completed in this course.
